When the Sign Says “No Parents Allowed”
Beware of doctors that won’t let you as a parent accompany your child to the clinical area. Bullying, coercion, or force are all ruthless attempts to not empower us as patients. Not allowing a parent to accompany their child, under the guise of the HIPPA Act, or any other horrific or lame reason- is sending a message that parents DON’T MAKE MEDICAL DECISIONS FOR THEIR CHILDREN ONLY THE ALMIGHTY, ARROGANT DOCTORS DO.
What makes this sign/policy even more disturbing is that the HIPPA Privacy Act is suppose to PROTECT US FROM TYRANNY OR ANY UNETHICAL DEEDS done by doctors and any other outside parties. It is absurd to think that a child’s privacy is being violated by having THEIR OWN PARENT WITH THEM.
Children need their parents- who are their strongest advocates for their well being.
Children can not make medical decisions on their own. No parent should ever support doctors that prescribe to the model of “no parent with child”. These doctors are dangerous to families and can not be trusted alone with children. If every parent knew how important their role is in their child’s medical history and treatments, they could not support such a medical practice. Such doctors would either go out of business or change their policies very quickly. They can not afford to lose their patients.
Go only to doctors who are not only respectful of your presence but VALUE it.
Some practices really do fail to respect the special role parents play in a young patient’s life. But most professionals understand and appreciate what parents bring to the table. If you see a sign like this one, ask them about it. If it is truly their intention to stand between you and your child, find a new doctor. If it is not, you might graciously suggest they fix their sign. Either way, both your children and our cause will be served best by a polite and civil discourse for as long as that is possible.(And as another commented, it is often not the doctor but overreaching government that is pushing them to “police” you anyway. The doctor may well be on your side!)
The 1996 HIPAA Privacy Rule for the first time creates national standards to protect individuals’ medical records and other personal health information. It gives patients more control over their health information. It sets boundaries on the use and release of health records.
HIPAA: Acronym that stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a US law designed to provide privacy standards to protect patients’ medical records and other health information provided to health plans, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers.
